Understanding the Enrolled Agent examination

The IRS Special Enrollment Examination (SEE) is one way to qualify for enrolled agent status. The exam has three parts: Individuals, Businesses, and Representation, Practices and Procedures.

Part 1 — Individuals

Focus on individual federal income tax rules, including filing status, dependents, income, deductions, credits, and related returns. Practice reading every fact carefully: a small change in filing status or relationship can change the result.

Part 2 — Businesses

Learn to distinguish sole proprietorships, partnerships, corporations, and other entities. Strong answers identify whose return reports income, which tax rules apply to the entity, and whether a special election is relevant.

Part 3 — Representation, Practices and Procedures

Expect questions about taxpayer representation and the professional responsibilities of practitioners. Pay close attention to which authorization allows representation and which permits only the disclosure of information.

How to practice effectively

  1. Answer a question without notes and record your confidence.
  2. Explain in your own words why your selection is correct.
  3. For each wrong option, identify the missing fact, different rule, or exception.
  4. Complete two follow-up applications before moving on.
  5. Return to weak topics after a delay, using a different factual pattern.
